When positioning yourself to the ball it is important to understand the difference between seting up to irons and woods. When you have a wedge, short or mid iron in your hand you want to position the ball in the middle of your stance, because you want to come down on the ball with a descending blow, compressing it, and then making a divot in front of it.

With a long iron position slightly off your left heel (right for lefties). This will give the club a little bit more loft so it's easier to control the release it has on the green. Your divot should be shallower with the long irons than with wedges, short and mid irons, but you should still have a divot.

With your fairway woods you should sweep the grass. To do this position the ball on your left heel (right for lefties). This will allow you to sweep the ball of the ground, get a nice hight on it, and let it land fairly softly on the greens.

With the driver place it a little bit farther on your front foot than with your fairway woods. It is important to get enough loft with your driver (9 - 12 degrees). Anything less than nine is too low, and won't carry much, and anything more than twelve goes to high and has too much spin on it which dramatically decreases your distance.
